Stunning Quality and Value

OK so this telly probably isn't the best on the market and those folks who post on forums and really care about numbers and gadgets will probably look down on it because it doesn't have this feature or that feature...Big Deal!
This is a fantastic set, particularly for anyone making the first move to HD. It does everything you really need and more without asking you to pay for technology that isn't even available (and probably wont be available for a good 5 or so years).
Easy to set up out of the box, nice and light and the remote and interface are as user friendly as you would expect (its a Sony after all). The Freeview is a little clunky when switching channels but the tv guide feature more than makes up for this and the picture quality is superb. My 360 looks Lovely through it and as soon as funds allow I'll have it wired up for Blue Ray also (via a PS3 of course).
My only regret is that I didnt have it before the F1 Season ended - roll on next season!!! |
Hooray - it's NOT piano black!

Perhaps I'm alone, but I really dislike a glossy black (aka "piano black") frame on a TV - I find it distracts from the image to see reflections in the frame.
The KDL-40L4000 is the only TV I've found of this size to have a MATT frame. So, regardless of all the techie stuff, that's why I chose this TV above all the others.
Why have so many manufacturers gone to such lengths to produce non-reflective screens, only to surround them with a distracting reflective frame?
BTW - even ignoring the frame, this is a great TV. |

| My Sony Bravia arrived this morning, after setting the television up, I was amazed instantly by the quality of the picture. I had to tinker with a few settings, but with such a clean and user friendly interface, it was a simple and very easy. I've played both PS3 games and Blue rays - Both look simply fantastic. The model is stylish to boot, A fantastic full HD TV for a cracking price. |
Sony KDL L or V 4000

| Following positive press reviews for the Sony KDL40V4000, This great t.v KDL40L4000 seems to be overlooked and why? The V has 3 hdmi connections and piano black frame the L has 2 hdmi and does not have what I personally think the distracting reflective P.black frame, otherwise its the exact same t.v. Oh and one other thing the L is about £80 less. The freeview picture quality is excellent and is better than what I receive through my BT vision box. The dark night watched on Blu ray through my laptop via a 10m hdmi lead at only £10 from Amazon far exceeded my expectations of how far affordable home cinema has come.. Highly recommended. |
Excellent TV

I spent a LONG time researching HD TVs, dragged around endless shops looking at them, and spent hours and hours looking through internet reviews, forums etc. In the end it was driving me crazy so I took the plunge and bought this model, and I'm very glad I did.
One of my biggest worries was that ordinary (non-HD) TV would look bad and blocky, as I had seen on friends' tvs and in showrooms. But I needn't have worried - the freeview picture quality on this set is excellent, whether using the inbuilt tuner or running it in from a set-top PVR as I am. The quality does vary depending on the channel - due to the limited bandwidth of digital terrestrial TV some channels are broadcast at a higher bitrate (ie. more detail) than others. The major channels look superb, with no visible artifacts at my 10' viewing distance. But even the channels that are of a lower quality are still perfectly watchable.
My DVDs, played in through the component interface look superb. This set does a great job of 'upscaling' non-HD pictures.
As for the HD display, that is also superb. I have only a few test videos and trailers that I can run through it at the moment, but they look stunning.
The relatively low price of this model means it doesn't have as many HDMI inputs as some others (only 2), and not so many features. But that in no way detracts from it's overall quality.
If you're struggling to decide which HD TV to buy, go for this. You won't be disappointed. |
A touch of class

Thought I'd give my thoughts here, I've been the proud owner of the 40L4000 for the last month now and had issues with constant picture fiddling trying to get it to look as good with sd sky as my last tube based Sony was. I realised the answer after buying the Toshiba XDE500 dvd player with some cash I won one the horses. The quality of dvd through the hdmi port is outstanding, so the tv itself isnt at fault, its the source of what I'm feeding it, in this case a sd sky box through a monster scart cable. I'm figuring most people will be in the same boat here. I watched the bristol city portsmouth game last night and spent most of the time messing about with the settings before going back to defaults which seemed pretty reasonable after all my tinkering. I hear the noise reduction argument but setting mine at medium takes care of the white lines and distortion on football which is what I use it most for.
So my setup is currently:
Toshiba XDE500 through a Synn HDMI 1.3b cable (Superb)
SD Sky Box through Monster Scart RGB Cable (Poor) - Upgrading to Sky Hd Next Paypacket!
Nintendo Wii through Official Nintendo component cable (Superb)
HP Laptop through XVGA cable (Superb)
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this tv to anyone who appreciates high quality AV, just dont expect to pour tizer into a wine glass and get Dom Perignon. |

Great TV and decent value. Rubbish delivery service from TJ Hughes (they expected me to take a day off!) and - only by chance - I only got the TV by picking it up myself from a depot. Pants really and I won't buy from them or Amazon again...Unless I get my £30 express delivery fee back!

I am so happy with this purchase. You will not get a better TV for this price, both in terms of picture and just how it looks. My opinion was that the gloss black plastic TV's (i.e 98% of all TV's currently for sale) looked tacky and cheap- this TV is finished in a beautiful smooth matt black and its a perfect size.
Its an extremely intuitive TV also- you don't have to go searching for which AV channel the dvd / Wii is on, when you switch it on, the TV simply switches for you. I have my top quality hi fi plugged in, but the built in speakers are top quality so I hardly ever use my aux. |
Excellent, although default settings need tweaking

| I purchased this television a few days ago, and have found it a joy to watch Blu Ray and HD-DVD on. Playing Xbox 360 and PS3 on this TV is wonderful, but the greatest improvement over my old HDTV was on the Wii, which benefits from the extra image processing abilities of this set. One thing that its worth noting is that for optimum image quality when viewing a high-definition source, it is important to turn the sharpness setting down to 1, as the "min" setting does not turn off sharpening when using a HDMI source (this is a bug in the software). Once that is done, and the backlight is turned down a bit, the experience is easily equal to that of a TV twice the price |

| Excellent tv. I brought my son a 26" Sony Bravia tv for his bedroom and the quality was excellent without an external aerial. I decided to renew my lounge tv and after a lot of researching decided on this 40". It was very easy to set up and the picture and sound quality is excellent. |
