Great Picture but with Fixable Chronic Sound Problem!

Review Date: October 3, 2009
Reviewer: Shauny-pie, UK
Ok - like so many people I decided to upgrade (from an excellent Phillips 32" CRT) to an LCD, and after months of deliberating I decided to go for this slightly more expensive model.

To keep it short, and in line with the other reviewers here, the image quality is simply excellent, both in SD and in HD. The built in freesat and freeview work very well (after you get over the Viera software quirkiness with the menu. like how much space the left side takes up and the channel select confirmation every time you navigate and select via the menu system).

Oodles of other features that will keep you busy for a while.

HOWEVER, and this is a big however, there is a chronic sound problem with this model THAT IS FIXABLE. I will describe the problem first and then the remedy.

It seems at certain frequency transmissions or on higher volumes the plastic casing seems to resonate which causes the sound to distort and it is rather annoying, especially as it is an expensive TV unit. I was genuinely horrified when I turned it on and flipped through a few channels and the sound was basically terrible i.e. distorted by the vibration of the back panel.

To make this better whilst you wait for the real fix, go into sound, turn down the Volume Correction quite a bit until it is almost off, adjust the bass and treble down a bit and then you have to turn the volume up quite a bit to get loud sound, but it helps reduce the distortion. THIS IS A TEMPORARY FIX!

Now, I sent Panasonic UK an e-mail describing the issue, and after a couple of weeks they contacted me with an explanation that a physical fix has been identified by Panasonic and to contact your local Panasonic support centre, which is listed on their UK web-site. I did this and the guy came round and fixed it unded warranty - no problems at all and he did a great job.

The fix itself was to completely remove the back panel and fit some special foam padding designed for these tye of speakers, so when the back panel was re-attached it was squashed into the foam slightly and hence all vibration generated is absorbed and no stupid distortion.

This was done a week back now and I am so pleased because I can have the TV up pretty much as loud as I want with the Volume Correction, bass and treble turned back up with no distortion - woo-hoo!

So the upshot is this - before the fix was in place I would have awarded quite simply a 1 star, because spending this sort of money and having poor sound from Panasonic is not acceptable. Aftr the fix I can honestly award a 5 star because I am now very pleased, although Panasonic should really have caught this in their Quality Control before shipping the units commercially!

Anyone experiencing this problem should definitely contact your local Panasonic dealer and get it fixed - you will be so pleased!
Typically excellent product from Panasonic

Reviewer: C. Stephenson,
I've had many Panasonic products over the years and this TV reinforces the reasons why that is.

Slim and attractive (for a TV) with loads of features, this is without doubt the best set I've owned. It sits beautifully flat against the wall, and produces excellent pictures across the board, but truly comes into it's own in full HD where the images produced are fantastic.

It is a little pricier than other brands, but with Panasonic you do get what you pay for.

For truly excellent sound, you'd need additional speakers to be honest, but we've found it more than meets our needs for all types of viewing requirements.

Highly recommended.
One of the best LCD 37" screens on the market

I was looking for my first flat screen purchase and so as many people do I trawled just about every web site I could find.
I had a gap on my wall just big enough for a 37" so that was may starting point.
The reviews just about everywhere for this set are great with the exception of the sound and the specifications on this set are truly impressive.
In particular it's standard definition quality was important to me as I currently have Sky+, and it did not disapoint. Quality is excellent with very little pixalation and no discernable bluring. Contrast and colour range is also excellent to my eye.
The menu options are as extensive as I need though I have read that other manufacturers allow much greater manual fine tuning. However I think there is a lot to be said for keeping things simple. It all worked just fine right out of the box set up was a sinch.
I have PS3 which having now seen it in 37" HD glory is a true revelation. The Panasonic realy does HD gaming well and blu-ray movies are eye watering.
It is true that the sound is not a cinematic 3D experience but no flat panel is ever going to provide this. If you want that level of sound you buy a cinema system.
I did not however experience any of the rattling described in some other reviews and to my ears the sound is perfectly acceptable. It seems Panasonic may have fixed this annoyance.
Media server is useful to access my NAS drive on the home network so I can stream pic's, music and films.
Price does come out a little high on many web sites, shop around though I found Curry's doing a bargain for a couple of weeks.
In short I am more than pleased with the set which is top of the line for it's size, come's fully loaded with all the conectivity and functions you could ask for and is a sinch to set up. Ace.
Awesome, excellent and more

I was going to buy the G10 of this series after it came out top in my researching, ahead of the Sony and Samsung offering at similar price. Good job I looked a bit higher, because the extra £100 that I paid to upgrade to V10 is well worth it. A decent 10 inch digital photo frame would set you back almost that amount, yet this TV streams photo from my PC with such ease, quality and beauty you would chuck your digital photo frame out of the window.

I am a proud owner of the 32LXD500, argueably the best LCD TV of 5 years ago. In comparison, the TX-L37V10 is only a touch wider, as it has no speakers by the side of the frame. But then the LXD500 sound is so much superior to this V10. You cant have it both ways.

The V10 so much lighter yet feels so compact and well put together. You get the feel of quality as you lift it.

Picture quality is top drawer both in colour and smoothness. HD even at 1080i is superb.

Sound is on the thin side, but then as I explained above it is an understandable compromise. Doesnt matter for me. This unit has optical as well as Analogue Sound output to my Receiver.

Network connection: All I needed was plug the TV to my router, Enable it for sharing in Windows Media Player (options - network - sharing) and I was watching photos from my PC. The whole thing took me less than minute to set up.

Viera CAST: Limited contents. But what is there YouTube, Eurosport, Bloomberg, etc - they show very well. Even the grainy YouTube videos came out better. ALSO, the sound from VieraCAST is actually more powerful than from the Sky channel.

Game: COD4 looks so excellent.

This is a TV for today and tomorrow. It is the best out there for the price at the moment.

Very pleased

This is my first flat screen tv, have seen others in friends houses that did not impress me (everyone was short and fat), but love this one as it has so many configurations for the picture so you can set it up as you like to view, it also has a whole host of additional stuff like free sat and I have used the SD card slot for an excellent photo slideshow. Bought the Panasonic Blu-Ray player later and with Viera Link it is so easy to connect the two.
Panasonic TX L37V10B - brilliant quality T.V

We ordered this Television on Dec 23rd and it arrived the next day. Just in time for Christmas.
Once out of the box the TV looks great. The silver stand gives it a much better aesthetic look.
The TV itself is very slim and is easy to move. Plug in and the Panasonic goes into auto- setup mode and sets up everything once you have given a few details such as postcode (needed for regional channels). This takes about five minutes.

The picture is excellent on freeview and we are very impressed. Great colours and very sharp images. There are lots of settings you can change to your own liking.
We have not had a Freesat dish installed yet but we have read the HD channels are fantastic picture quality.

The sound for normal TV etc was better than we expected. We read the other reviews but we need not have worried. This more than meets our needs. You can again change various settings. All very easy.
Of course if you do want pumping bass and surround sound then you could also connect a home cinema speaker system. There are lots of connectivity inputs & outputs on the rear of the TV.

Viera Cast & DNLA.
These are really good features. The ability to view all our digital camera pics and Div X files streamed from the PC is brilliant. So to is watching YouTube from the comfort of your armchair. The quality is not bad either even when viewed in full screen mode.
This is just our opinion but we are very impressed with this TV. Go get one...

Having looked online for a Panasonic Tv that had full HD . I came across this model and was knocked out by its spec. The only downside with this Tv is the sound from the Tv speakers which point downwards. The sound is quite weak and can be very boom box like if you turn it up to compensate for it. The only way to fully over come this is to use a surround amp to improve the sound. Which I will do as and when fiance's become available. But the overal picture on this set is stunning and well worth the outlay. Just watching stand alone broadcasts are very good indeed. And if you have a dvd player/recorder that can upscale to 1080p while watching normal tv.You will find it hard to go back to your Dvb tuner within the Tv its self. Also watching upscaled DVD's are just great to and I am now going back to my collection of Dvd's to watch them again in upscaled mode. This means I will not be going down the route of getting a Blueray player while I can still get hold of normal Dvds and watch them upscaled. Would I recommend this set to anyone yes I would but do bare in mind the sound problem produced by this set,

I bought this TV for its functionality and looks and I haven't been disappointed. It was one of the thinest LCD avaialable and when wall mounted with a £40 bracket from John Lewis looks the part. The stand it comes with is the best I've seen if you want to mount it on top of furniture (but for me that the defeats the purpose of an LCD TV)

The sound can be a little disappointing but can be easily played through an amplified speaker (on the occassions where great sound is important to you) but for day to day watching the in built speakers perform OK

Picture must be viewed from a distant (3m+) to get maximum benefit (but that probably saves your eyes anyway)

The HDMI cables are well placed allowing a wall mount without the cables interfering (if you use HMI 4)

I haven't connected this product up to a Viera linked Blu Ray yet but the link on other Panasonic products is a great feature if you are into single remote operation
Great Picture and Good Looks - Shame About the Sound!

Reviewer: Josh's Mum & Dad,
I have been loyal to the Panasonic brand for longer than I can remember and the last couple of TVs, including this one, were purchased based on features and reviews rather than my actually seeing and/or demoing in the flesh.

The picture quality on this TV is everything I expected but the sound is very poor for a TV in this price range. It appears that this is the result of trying to squeeze speakers into the thin casing and is becoming a common complaint with people reviewing this TV. Once wall mounted the sound did improve very slightly but still well below what I'd expect.

I have now invested in an AV Receiver (Denon AVR 1910) and external speakers (Q-Acoustics 5.1 1010i package), more than doubling the intended investment in the TV, so the sound is no longer a problem as the TV's speakers are now redundant. I now have a great setup but one I didn't realise I wanted (or needed!) a couple of months ago,

Picture quality is why I've given 3 stars - if the sound was half decent I would have awarded 5. Unless you are planning on playing sound via external speakers I would think twice before buying this TV.

Probably the last time I will buy Panasonic without seeing and hearing it first.
So disappointed

As a Panasonic fan, delighted with all my other Panny products, I purchased this tv expecting high standards. How wrong I was.

I already have a 42 inch Panasonic plasma which is wonderful on all counts. Side by side, although the picture on this set is very good, it just looks artificial against the plasma. The colours are just too bright and vivid, whatever the setting. The LCD v plasma debate has been had many times before but I definitely know which I prefer. Unfortunately there aren't many 37inch plasmas these days!

So, for an LCD tv, the picture is fine. SD is ok (clarity is still not as good as my plasma though), HD is impressive, especially through my Panasonic BluRay player, which obviously operates at a higher quality than broadcast HD.

But then there is the sound quality. Quite frankly it's appalling. And yes, I've had an engineer out to fix the vibration problems referred to elsewhere in these reviews using the Panasonic update kit. It still sounds no better than a £10 portable radio. The engineer even changed the speakers because he thought they were faulty but there was no improvement. The engineer himself described the set as sounding like a mutilated cat (although I admit that I have never had the experience of meeting a mutilated cat so am unable to comment on his comparison!).

I know people will tell me that all modern tvs have poor sound because the cases are so thin, but the quality of this Panasonic is just unacceptable. No matter how you have the sound settings configured, it just sounds painful. Partly perhaps because the speakers face down rather than out into the room. The whole viewing experience is ruined.

I could always add a separate sound system, but why should I need to do this when I purchased this high end model as a second set for occasional use? The reality is that neither my wife nor I want to watch the set for more than a few minutes at a time because of the painful sound. It sits in our study gathering dust.

I deliberately avoiding buying a Samsung LED because they supposedly have even thinner cases and also suffer from sound problems but they really couldn't be worse than this. We listened to the set in a showroom prior to purchase but it's only when you get it into a domestic environment that you realise just how awful it is.

Shame on you Panasonic for releasing such a sub-standard product.
Dissappointing

I have a large Pana Plasma - so I expected good things. Very little about this LCD is good. I am actually a Pana convert - used to pray to Sony. But having pained over my current Sony PVR which needs more restarts than my first car, and a failed Sony camcorder, I decided the time was right to change. So I converted to Panasonic - and I was pleased, My Plasma is great. And there it ends. Then I buy this Pana LCD for my office. I wanted to be able to connect it to my network so I went for DLNA - little did I know DLNA is a joke. It means nothing. You cant stream music to this LCD - Why not? You can't view photos unless they are in exactly the right format - not just a JPG - but a special format JPG - err ? Does Panasonic really think people are going to reformat all their pictures just because Panasonic thinks they should? Eh - No!

So I have an LCD on the wall - and don't let me forget the image quality is only fair at best. Its grainy. Its blocky. Its, well,,,, just not good. Unlike my Plasma - but then I am not reviewing the Plasma here.

So if you want to make use of DLNA and you want a good screen picture - look elsewhere
