Panasonic V10

I have always been a fan of Panasonic screens even though sometimes other attributes are not quite so good. For me, the overiding factor is the quality of the image reproduction. This V10 is fantastic. I have freesat connected and the image on all stations is the best I have seen anywhere.
I spent ages looking at reviews on the net, visiting shops before settling on a 42" V10. The one piece of glass makes it look good even when it is switched off. The Viera cast is, I think, a bit of a waste of effort at the moment as most folk will connect a PC to browse the Internet. If there is a lan port, then I wish they would just include a browser like Firefox with the TV. Plug in a remote keyboard+mouse via usb, and job would be done!
My only moan so far is the lack of a USB port, but I'd forgive anything for that fantastic picture.
And the value for money is good if you shop wisely, I saved £450 over my local high street price. I would love to support my local high street, but not at that cost!
Last thing is the eco mode. The new plasma design runs with less power than other screens, the top of the unit doesn't get too warm so it isn't so power hungry. It can also automatically dim itself to match the ambient room light level.
Overall, V. satisfied. And I swear I don't work for Panasonic! |

This is our first foray into true HD TV and after much internet searching of reviews and visits to the local eletrical superstores we settled on the Panasonic TX-P42V10B.
What a superb piece of equipment this television is. The picture quality is absolutely first class and connected to some Logitech speakers gives a full cinema experience.
It is relatively straightforward to set up, in fact it does the vast majority of its own setting up, you just have to work out where to plug in the necessary cables be they HDMI, aerial, optical or SCART. Once set up it is a joy to use. The remote is easy enough and controls the Video/BluRay as well (provided it is Panasonic too).
Downside: well thus far nothing has come to light, sound and picture quality and ease of use are all excellent.
We are very pleased with our purchase and would have no hesitation in recommending same to anyone.

Top Picture for HD / SD / and upscaled content

I have BT Vision piped through at 1080i upscaling and I can't fault the picture.
I actually bought the item from an official Panasonic dealer at a premium price but got a BD60 Blu Ray thrown in plus a 5 year warranty and interest free for 12 months.
The set is fantastic. The blacks are deep as you'd expect on a Plasma panel and the motion handling on Match of the Day is first class. I have yet to hook up a satellite dish but plan to do so.
The colours after 6 hours are just natural ! Any doubts you have over buying this set, set to one and side and splash the cash.. You will not regret it this is a 5 star set.
I almost purchased the Sony Z5500 which is a fantastic looking set but the colours are just not a natural... its a wow factor of LCD in the shop... but would you want to live with it... This V10 panel has a dynamic picture mode for LCD fans... it over brightens the picture and saturates the colours.... IMHO
The THX and styling of this set makes it worth the premium... I also had a BluRay thrown in so I was always going to pay the premium for the free player... |
Superb Plasma

Having owned 3 LCD TV's I decided to take the plunge with a Plasma. I am not in the least bit disappointed. When you view it in a store it won't have the "pop" of an LCD screen, but the image is so much better and more natural for home use. I was initially concerned about image retention and screen burn, but having used my PS3 and Xbox for many hours it seems like this is a thing of the past. I also heard about the fans in the back of the set, but you cannot hear them at all. My V+ box is much louder than the TV!
The image reproduction on this screen is first class once you turn off the gimicky motion plus. For the first week or so there was a slight flicker on the screen while the phosphors settled down, but this soon went. The longer I've had this TV the better the picture has got. Colours are superbly reproduced in THX mode, which automatically turns off overscan, so you get 1:1 pixel mapping, and motion is handled as well as on any TV I've seen. The sound is as good as you'd expect from a TV, however I use my home cinema system for this. The glass screen can reflect at times, but carefully positioning the set, and any lighting positioned correctly will make this a non-issue. A few reviews commented that the screen was too dark for daytime viewing. I've never had this problem, and use the 50% brightness and contrast with no issues.
There are only 2 let downs with this set. The first being the lack of picture options on the UK model. You can only adjust colour, brightness, contrast and shapness. However the THX mode is the best "out of the box" option i've ever seen (If you connect the TV to the internet it updates to the latest software which corrects the original errors in the THX mode), and if this isn't good enough you really should be having it professionally calibrated anyway, so it's a non-issue really.
The second let down is the lack of media funtion - there's no USB support, and the SD Card slot has limited options. However, my PS3 has all the media options i need so once again, for me it's not a problem, but to others it may be.
All in all this is the best set I've ever owned, and I'm a particularly hard to please techno nerd! 5 Stars. |

After reading reviews of TVs for months I narrowed down my choice - actually for the Panasonic G15, but when I found this for not much more money at Amazon, I decided to finally get on with it and buy the V10.
The V10 just looked a whole lot better than the next models down, with the glass screen going right to the edge, rather than the large plasticky edges that are on a lot of screens.
My brother-in-law had bought a Panasonic plasma last year, and despite mainly looking at LCDs at the time, was so impressed I looked harder at plasmas too. Having bought a Panasonic Hard disk/DVD recorder earlier in the year Panasonic was high on the list of course.
Very pleased. Our first flatscreen TV, full HD etc. Easy to set up, tune in etc. Freeview was up and running in no time. The picture was great and the sound is fine too. I was concerned that sound on flatscreens can be pretty tinny, but this is quite decent, even with a bit of action and loud music in a film.
Being THX certified it shouldn't need setting up and calibrating - the settings should be good once in THX mode. It's running in standard mode at the moment until it's "run in" for a while, and then I will try THX. Some people comment that it is a shame that this TV (and some other Panasonics) cannot be setup for colour management etc but the THX cert theoretically means it doesn't need to be.
The manual looks a bit cheap but it's all so easy to use you hardly need it.
The remote is obviously related to the one on my recorder so it was easy to use, but anyone new to it should have no problems.
I was so pleased with the picture that it was only a few weeks and I had a satellite dish installed for the Freesat that this TV comes with as standard. The picture's similar to Freeview, but does have BBC HD, which is crisp and clear as you'd expect. Just need to get a Bluray player next, slthough standard DVD upscaled to 1080p looks good anyway.
I have yet to play with Viera Cast, the (limited) internet connection, but will do at some point.
I remember seeing a flatscreen TV years ago and thought it was unwatchable becasue of motion blur. I'm please to say I haven't noticed any on this screen, it seems to cope with everything we throw at it. I haven't noticed any artificial adges etc, something that software processing can cause I understand.
All in all I'm very pleased and the V10 is an sxcellent choice. |

I am very pleased with this TV, the picture quality is the best I've seen since a friend bought a Kuro a year ago. Blacks are super black and motion is excellent. I'm not sure it's worth the extra 300 over the Panasonic G10, but it looks better, is thinner and has the excellent THX picture setting for films.
It must be good as even my wife could tell it was better than my 1yr old 1080p Toshiba LCD that this replaces. |
Up there with the legendary Kuro!!

This Plasma is simply stunning. The professional reviews have been extremely good, including winning the EISA best Plasma award for 2009! The set comes with a THX viewing mode, which gives out-of-the-box extremely accurate picture settings that normally require professional calibration. Blacks are typically superb for a Panasonic Plasma. Motion is handled excellently via the superb 600Hz NeoPDP panel. Colours are rich and vibrant. I used to an LCD fanatic, but was swayed over to the world of Plasma and haven't regretted it! I have Sky HD, Freesat HD, Blu Ray and HD DVD connected. HD images are stunning. SD is obviously not quite as good, but is handled very competently nonetheless. My advice when buying this set is to get some HD material in as it is with HD that this set really shines.
To sum up: this is undoubtedly one of the best Plasma TVs that money can buy. It can share the podium with the Kuro (although the Kuro still wins the Blacks contest). Highly recommended. |

Having waited till this so called new tech caught up with old tech cathode ray tubes, I am extremely pleased with my choice. I cannot say it's better than my old Sony CRT, bigger is not better, but picture quality does match it in Freesat HD. The LCD's are way behind no matter what the reviews say. However without the THX setting this too would look garish and false.
As I have waited for technology to catch up, some of my equipment is pre HDMI, so why have S-Video sockets on the side of the TV, leaving the plugs exposed, rather than behind that enormous screen, poor design.
But I have to say great picture and decent price, well done Panasonic. |
Superb product!

Easy to set up, enter your postcode upon first starting up and it'll automatically find all the channels and number it accordingly. I made sure the satellite cable and aerial were plugged in before starting up.
Compared the V10 against Samsung's latest LED and Sony's LCD, it wins hands down in terms of colour rendition and black levels. THX mode makes watching movies a pleasure. Caught Star Wars ep1 on ITV HD via freesat last Saturday and I was glued to it. Perfect colour rendition and 24p brings the cinema experience home.
For sports I switch to Cinema mode to get the judder free 600hz experience. Again watching the England match in BBC HD was bliss! Movies however, appear too smooth in 'Cinema mode' in my opinion hence I easily switch to THX mode.
DLNA works well with my Macbook Pro. There's a serial number for TwonkyMedia Server program included in the box to allow DivX files to be accessed from the TV via the LAN port. How I wished the TV would also play DivX+ files (ie. High Definition MKV).
Viera Cast is set up to show my local weather. Youtube can also be viewed but only in standard definition. Would also be great if Panasonic could find a way in placing BBC iPlayer into it. Hoping a firmware update could be done for this.
Sound is OK, not amazing but adequate, planning to get one of Panasonic's home theater system for this.
The one glass design is beautiful and modern.. definitely better than the G10/G15. Included also is a microfibre cloth to keep it shiny, smudge free!
OVERALL
Pros: Best picture quality, superb design, Freesat, DLNA, DivX
Cons: No DivX+/HD support, youtube only SD format |

I've has this tv for about 10 days & I am relieved that it proof that you get what you paid for (although I'm certain prices will fall when other manufacturers catch up with the Freesat technology).
I haven't had to fiddle with the colour, not the aspect ratio (I've got it on auto select) as all appears natural.
The only thing that would be helpful to those who rely upon subtitles, is the EPG could be similarly configured to that of Sky's format & highlighting programmes that have subtitles. |
Great Display - extra features need more development

The panel produces a great picture.
However one is paying a big premium over other similar Panasonic displays for the Freesat, Freeview, DLNA and Viera cast features.
The Freesat and freeview features work fine.
Given a suitable dish & TV antenna the set scans for all the channels and gives them sensible numbers and an easy to access Electronic Program Guide.
The DLNA feature plays media files from your PC in very specific and limited formats.
It will not play video from High Definition files at all. It will only play standard definition DivX and MPEG2 files and even then only with the right encapsulation. Anyone used to MPLAYER , VLC, or even Microsoft Media Player on their PC is in for a very big disappointment as the great majority of their files will be rejected.
The Vieracast feature allows the viewing of JPEG pictures but does not allow you to choose your own MP3 accompaniment. The ZOOM feature is disabled for slide shows and so you get grey borders.
One can also view you tube videos directly but these do not look good on the big screen due to their limited resolution.
The only data card allowed is SD so if your camera uses compact flash etc you are locked out - it would have been so easy to add other formats or a USB socket.
