A Gem of a TV...

I recently gave away my beloved 40W4500 to my father as his old Panny died on him. I had my mind set on purchasing the new Sony Z series, but after my second child managed to damage my DVD tray on my dvd recorder (due to a momentary lapse of concentration) I did not want to risk it. I recently seen the 42XV635DB at a showroom nearby and thought it looked good for the price (which was around £630+ on the net). I thought why not and took the plunge. I've had a Tosh before so I wasn't expecting anything bad.
Anyway, the first thing you will notice is that it has ample connections, 4 HDMI, 2 SCART's and the usual stuff like component etc. Aesthetically the 42xv635db looks very nice, it has a glossy thin frame and a very thin speaker grill/bar at the bottom(Although the speaker grill looks thin, don't be fooled). The sound this TV produces is extremely good. The sound is full and rich with clarity. I assume this is due to the Audyssey Dynamic EQ feature. It also has the ability to playback MP3, DivX etc through the USB port, which by the way is pretty fast in displaying photos etc. It also has a full power down button on the left, which I think is very handy(as I power down all my kit at night).
As I have used the Sony 40W4500 for nearly a year, I have a good TV to compare against. Firstly, the blacks on this TV is on par with the 40W4500, i.e. they are very good. But, what impressed me the most on this TV was the colours they are more natural and also seem allot deeper. 3D Cartoons etc seem more 3D like and display greater clarity, the colours and gradients are more strking, everything just seems more natural. I wasn't expecting this but it did make a difference on my viewing. The Sony was good and I had calibrated it with reference from the avforums site. But, they just didn't have that certain bang in colour. Another great thing is the SD picture it is much better, I guess this is due to the Resolution+, which upscales the image( It isn't anything life changing, but it is good), it is definetly better than the Sony, the Sony's big weakness was it's SD resolution quality. Not, that I watch much SD stuff, but on the odd occassion I do.
One thing this TV has is allot of functionality, you can drown yourself in the number of settings. Although, if you really want to optimise the picture and audio quality you can do some real neat stuff. I made a few changes to the standard settings and the outcome is much better after the changes. You can play with the colour management settings; this allows you to adjust the colour to achieve D65 if you want(obviously you'll need reference software and your laptop connected to achieve this).
Now for the HD stuff, I must admit this is just as good as the 40W4500 if a bit better. The Sony was great and so is this TV. The images are striking, deep and full of life. The HD images are very detailed and full of clarity. At times it felt the Tosh trumps the 40W4500 in colour rendition, my Hulk blu-ray just looks astounding. It also has 1080p/24. I cannot fault the TV for HD images, they really are that good. The colour pallete seems extensive and produces very natural colours, but I guess it should as it is a 10-bit panel, with a 10-bit processing engine. At this price it is brilliant.
Secondly, for gaming I am sensitive to lag and one reason I chose the 40W4500 was due to it being great for gaming, this is just as good if not better. I was playing SFIV and I notice no lag whatsoever. It was fast and the action was brilliant, no blurring or any of the old LCD problems here. I have to praise the panel in the gaming department it felt a bit better when playing games, I am not sure if it's due to the colours or just the panel can handle the images better.
On this panel there is no backlight bleeding or clouding, on the 40W4500 I had very slight backlight bleeding, but the panel on the 42XV635DB seems to have none whatsoever, I'm not sure if it's due to the new eco panel, but it seems damn good. Most LCD panels have a slight issue, this is the first one not to have one(so I am definetly very impressed with the panel).
Another thing this panel has is M100HD pro 100hz processing (MCFI). When enabled does improve dramtically the image on fast action sports like football or F1. In this department it is as good as the 40W4500. they both seem the same to me, well the Sony was pretty good in this department anyway.
Bottomline, there is allot on this TV for the price, but the most important thing is that this TV produces outstanding images for the price. SD is well above average and HD performance is simply stunning. For this price I thoroughly recommend this TV. I was expecting something very different but it blew me a away.
To put it simply I was expecting a mouse, but it came out to be a behemoth of a wolf in sheeps clothing.
Kudos to Toshiba for bringing out a superb TV at such an affordable price. |
Absolutely stunning TV, on a great price with the £100 cashback offer!

Following a long research process to chose the best TV, I ordered the Toshiba 42XV635 last Saturday based on its characteristics (1080p, 100Hz) and some excellent customer reviews. At the time, Amazon had cut its price to 579 and adding the 100 cashback offer made it a no brainer. Despite ordering it on the standard 3-5 day delivery, the TV arrived early in the morning on Monday. Most of the other reviews say it all and it is really easy to setup, although I dont believe that this is quite an important issue for a product you're planning to use for years.
Having used it for some days now, I can confirm that its picture quality, sound, colors, and interface are magnificent. I've watched digital freeview on it, played some HD movies from my PC, and hooked up my Playstation 3 to it and they all look stunning. Metabrain and Resolution + engines make the digital SD look almost HD like, which is just another reason to buy the Tosh at this point. If it wasn't for the great price offer and the discount I would have probably gone for the Sony 40 inch, but I am extremely happy with the choice I made. |

| I ordered this TV from Amazon on the 14th September after our 12 year old CRT set finally gave up the ghost. The TV arrived on the morning of the 15th (next day delivery is well worth it) and is fantastic. We had spent a long time researching the internet for 37 to 50 inch LCD or Plasma screen TVs and decided on this one after reading reviews from buyers and review web sites. we have only been using it for one day but for the price it is quite remarkable. From taking it out of the box to watching our first programme took less than 20 minutes, and that included assembling the stand. The picture is enthralling, even on standard freeview and DVD. The sound is more than good enough for our average sized family living room and gives good detail both on sports coverage and film watching. The whole experience is quite immersive and our children think we have moved into a cinema. we like the energy saving features, we can switch the main power off when not in use, and the way the picture adjusts automatically on top of all the other features. Our only difficulty is what to watch next. I would recommend thoroughly that you consider this set for a simple to use, good quality and value for money larger screen TV. |
Great TV! Love it.

This is my first ever HD TV and I have done several weeks of research on HDTV. My only purpose of buying this TV at the time was for my PS3 Slim who kindly given to me as a present by my wife. With the old CRT television it felt that it didn't do justice to the games and decided to get an HDTV. First was to find out if I want an LCD, Plasma or LED. Plasma was my first choice at the time and nearly bought a Panasonic 50" G10. But then after further research I had a second thought. LED is too expensive at this time and since standard broadcast is also in my consideration I thought it won't be worth it. LCD is then my final option. I looked at Samsung 5th generation LCDs and Sony W5500 as well. Though I have only seen some demo at Curry's and Comet, I thought I would get one of them. But then I looked at the alternatives as well and noticed this Toshiba 42XV. I have a friend who has a Toshiba LCD TV but I didn't like it as it was blurry on moving objects and thought the brand is not synonymous with television. But I was happy with the display in the shop and happy with the price. I almost bought it but I had a second thought(like always). I wanted to find out more about this Toshiba TV. To my surprise, the TV had some great reviews and the price is great for the size of the TV. Further research also unearthed a £100 from Toshiba until Nov 11. I bought the TV here on Amazon on a Saturday afternoon and thought I would receive it late the following week. To my surprise, it was delivered on a Monday afternoon. Woohoo!
First impression of the TV is great. Great packaging, assembly instructions is good and the TV has a glossy finish to it. Assembly is very simple. This thing is lighter than my old TV. 8 screws to fit for the standing position. Tuning the TV is simple enough and then you are ready to go. The quality of the picture is great and with the digital channels all look superb. I didn't tweak the picture settings as I thought they are fine for us. The standard broadcast displayed on the TV is so great it looks HD already. Some people said it is like watching normal TV channels in almost high definition. PS3 games are awesome on this TV. Crisp and clear graphics with no delay and in perfect colour all the time. Sound is superb as well though I have not tested it but it is good enough for the size of our living room.
All in all, great TV for the size and the price is superb. Get your £100 cashback by registering the TV on Toshiba's website and post the necessary documents using recorded service. Keep the receipt with you. |

Absolutely wonderful TV.
Very easy to set up and configure - from putting the stand on to tuning and adjusting the settings. It was literally up and running in 20 minutes. I have connected it to Sky, DVD player, XBox and Media box. All worked well and without messing around with cables or settings.
The picture quality is excellent, as is the sound.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a high quality 40+ inch screen TV. |

After ten years I decided it was time to move on from my German Loewe Aconda and go Flat Screen and Full HD. Like most people reading this review I visted many web sites and electronic shops examining the various options. The first decision was LCD or Plasma. The general impression I got was that plasma was superior and so I ignored LCDs. However, most LCDs I looked at seemed better to me, especially in strong light, so I decided to go with LCD. I suspect LCDs have overcome a lot of the issues which held them back compared to Plasmas.
I looked at Samsung and LG and was about to buy one when I saw the Toshiba online had received many excellent reviews. Espeically on the German Amazon site (I live in Germany) where it got 12 five star reviews - and trust me it is difficult to impress the Germans when it comes to technology. Based on this alone I ordered the 42XV635, without even seeing the picture, and all I can say is that it is an amazing TV. I was going add on to the last comment "for the price" but that would give the impression that if you paid twice as more you would get something better; I dont think this is true. Friends have paid twice, and three times, as much and their picture qualiy (what else is there really with a TV) is not as good.
Just to be clear I can only speak about the picture quality produced from a Blu-Ray player. I paired it up with an LG BD 370 Blu Ray player and Transporter II (a fun movie) when I pressed play the picture was simply jaw dropping . I am hard to impress but the quality - even in strong daylight - seems as close to perfect as you can get. I could not find a fault with it. I havent played any regular DVDs on it or watched TV and maybe it is weak in these areas, I dont know. However, I suspect within a year or two HD is going to start to predominate so there is no point looking backwards and making a decision based on this. One of the key advantages of this TV (and other models I presume) is that it accepts the 24P input which the LG Blu-Ray puts out and I suspect (although maybe I am wrong) this contributes towards the quality of the picture. But in short I dont care how it is achieved the picture quality is truly impressive.
Beyond the picture it has an amazing amount of potential imputs ranging from 4 HDMIs to USB and SD Cards. The front-end software on the TV isnt great and neither is the instruction manual but to be honest I dont care. Once you see the picture you go "wow!" and that's all the counts. I mighgt as well add in that the LG BD 370, for around 170 euros, is a great Blu-Ray player. The front-end software is very very impressive; clean, crisp and easy to navigate. It plays not only blu-ray discs but a seemingly endless list of other formats including MP3s, JPEGs, Divx etc via a USB port. You can also plug in a Lan cable and it has a fantastic You Tube viewer which allows you to navigage around You Tube. More fun that it sounds. In the US downloading HD movies via the internet is beginning to appear and I suspect this will catch on in Europe eventually. I think this is what the LAN cable connection is really for and eventually viewed movies over the NET or downloading them wil become popular although internet speeds of 8 MBS or more would be needed. |
No regrets..

I received this yesterday with next day delivery and am thoroughly impressed. The service itself was slick and I had no worries with the order through Amazon UK. The TV is BIG and the picture a joy - particularly with HD and gaming on the go. Even SD footage comes across very sharp.
There's enough in the menu to tweak the audio/video to your liking but the presets are fine for me, for now.
One big selling point (at the time of writing) is the fact that you can get cashback on this item. This determined the choice for me, out of this model, a Samsung and a Sony alternative. One word of warning when submitting your cashback application with the Post Office - they will probably question the post code specified: TN22 6UZ. There are two that appear on the terms and conditions, here, or the Toshiba site, but "apparently" either one works fine and should arrive safely. Just make sure you send it recorded delivery for safety.
PS. Do it before the postal strike kicks in!!!!!!

| I've had this TV for a few months now so thought I would leave a review. I am very happy indeed with this TV and as I took advantage of a Toshiba rebate it made it amazing value. I have Sky HD and a PS3 and the image quality from HD streams is superb. What I am even more impressed with however is the image quality of SD feeds that are enhanced by the various features on the TV. It was a breeze to set up and the auto contrast works brilliantly in all light conditions. I have a Bose sound system that normally handles the audio, however the sound from this TV is pretty good considering the size of speakers, just a lack of bass which is understandable considering how slim the TV is. I would recommend this TV in a heartbeat. |
Unbeatable features and value - but not quite perfect black performance

I have spent many sleepless nights over which new 40-42" TV to buy. This is my first big screen purchase and I wanted to get the absolute most for my money on a budget of around £600-£700. I poured over review after review, fretting that I would buy the wrong telly and regret it forever.
I eventually plumped for the Toshiba Regza 42XV635DB after taking into consideration the £100 cashback offer (available way into Nov 2009), its range of features and some pretty good user recommendations. There weren't many in-depth expert reviews online to back up Toshiba's claims, but I felt that I would not be able to get a better LCD for the price. Turns out I was right.
PICTURE QUALITY
The standard definition picture on this set is excellent, provided you are sat at least 5-6 feet away from the screen (as you should be, square-eyes). Resolution+ and 100hz make this set a delight to behold when watching Freeview and the High Definition picture is outstanding. The preset image settings are a bit yellow, but all aspects of colour/picture configuration can be altered to obtain the perfect setting for your room. Even the Toshiba logo illumination can be turned on and off.
The only minus point, and it's a minor one, is that the black level will never be as low as a decent plasma set. If you're a home cinema purist, then this probably won't be something you'll be able to live with, but everyone else, especially those who are used to LCD, will be more than happy. I find the viewing angle to be quite good, with not a massive deal of greying from the sides, but my television is in the corner of the room, not wall mounted.
FEATURES
Tons of sockets, including Optical Out for hooking up to your surround sound system. EPG is crisp, fast and easy to use. The Regza link software works excellently with my Panasonic 5.1 DVD system - the Toshiba remote will even eject DVDs from the player when the Panasonic remote doesn't have an eject button! SD card reader is a nice touch, beats getting the slide projector out.
SOUND
Sound seems OK when you've nothing to compare it to, but does vary from programme to programme on Freeview. Most flat panel TVs have poor sound in comparison to big CRTs, hook this up to a decent 5.1 system and you'll immediately hear the difference. I always intended to put my audio through an amp so the TV doesn't lose any marks for me on this, especially when sound quality can be very subjective.
OVERALL
Simply brilliant, I absolutely love it and I dare anyone to find a bigger, better TV for the cashback price of £550. The only gripe I would have is that the black is not quite deep enough when watching movies, even with the backlight turned down. I am positive that if the black was darker, this TV would not be so cheap. However, this is not enough of a problem for the TV to lose a star - 5/5. |
